One of the world's largest online retailers needed to use 3D printing to solve a security feature on conveyor belts in their logistics centres. This was a specific cover that partially covers the spaces between the drive belts and thus protects employees from work-related injuries when handling packages on the belt. Initially, there were two versions of the cover and our challenge was to unify the design and create one universal cover that was user-friendly and easy to put on and take off.
After testing two prototypes printed in PA 12 material on an HP Jet Fusion 4200 3D printer, we immediately printed dozens more for long-term validation. A single print job can accommodate up to 560 parts, which can be printed in as little as 10 hours. The PA 12 material proved to be tough and durable enough for the harsh conditions of conveyor belts. Following their successful deployment, the company plans to use HP Jet Fusion 3D printing technology to produce functional plugs for its logistics system across Europe.
