NEW 3D SCANNER GOM SCAN 1 - THE IDEAL SOLUTION FOR QUALITY CONTROL OF 3D PRINTING

GOM Scan 1 can be connected to a rotary table to automate the actual 3D scanning process.

Launched today, the GOM Scan 1 is the first live projection 3D scanner jointly developed by GOM and ZEISS since their merger in 2019.

A first look at the presented parameters shows the interesting compactness of the solution. With dimensions of 290 x 210 x 80 mm and a weight of just 2.5 kg, it allows scanning even in hard-to-reach places such as the interior of a car. Handling the scanner is easy both when used on a tripod and when clamped on a studio stand. For more efficient measurement of smaller parts, a software-controlled rotary table with a load capacity of 20 kg can be attached, which is familiar from the GOM ATOS Q 3D scanner.

The GOM Scan 1 offers a resolution of 6 MPx, which is sufficient to capture even small details. Accuracy is verified by the VDI 2634 method and is in the hundredths of a millimeter. The scanning process uses proven stereo technology, strip projection and blue LED light. With each scan, it checks whether the ambient light intensity has changed, whether a part has moved during the projection of the stripes or whether the scanner is still accurately calibrated. The output is an accurate polygonal mesh with very low noise. It is marketed directly in three specifications with different scan sizes.

The new product targets the mid-market segment, so it is also intended for small and medium-sized companies, and the target applications are 3D printing, reverse engineering, or production quality control. From our point of view, it is the destination for 3D printing that is interesting. When inspecting printed parts, it is easy to check whether the part is dimensionally correct or whether it is deformed or shrunk. For metal 3D printing, in addition to dimensions, it is also important to check for sufficient allowances for accurate finishing. In serial printing, the information obtained in this way will in turn enable optimization of the printing parameters and thus improve the quality and accuracy of the resulting parts. In addition to inspecting parts that have already been printed, the 3D scanner is also useful for acquiring data for 3D printing. The output from 3D scanning is the same data format as used for 3D printing - a polygonal mesh (e.g. STL file format). For 3D printing, the digital model must be enclosed in a volume. If the physical part can be scanned completely, then GOM software functions such as interpolation hole gluing or polygon mesh optimization tools are sufficient to fully enclose the volume. If the scanned model needs to be more shape modified or some dimensions need to be changed, then specialized reverse engineering software such as ZEISS Reverse Engineering, Geomagic, CATIA, and others come into play. But GOM Scan 1 is also used in many other areas and applications.

The system comes with the latest GOM Inspect Suite software, which guides the user through the entire process from calibration, through scanning and polygonization, to the output inspection reports. The software is parametric, which significantly speeds up the re-inspection of the same part. Simply import the second scanned part into the first part project and everything is automatically updated up to the reports. In addition, various statistical indicators can be monitored as the shape and dimensions of the part change over time (production stability).
